The Richmeier Bugs

I am one of those moms that likes to have themes for their children's costumes.  It's fun, it's cute.  It makes me happy.  Maybe not my kids, but hey, they are getting candy.  Last year, Hayley was Mary and Ryan was her lamb.  It was so cute.  Click here to see how right I am.  However, the lamb costume did not make Ryan happy, at all.  So, last year, I swore to her that she could be anything that she wanted for Halloween this year.  I was really hoping for a pirate theme this year, but she refused.  She wanted to be a ladybug.  Hayley wanted to be Alice, then the white queen, or maybe Alice.  Jack could be the blue caterpillar or even the Mad Hatter.  I asked Ryan if she would be my red queen and told her she could run around shouting; "Off with your head!"  Again, she told me no and that she wanted to be a ladybug.  She wasn't budging and I had promised.

After I saw a cute bumble bee outfit for Jack, I decided that bugs would be a cute theme.  I just had to get Hayley on board with the idea.  First, she told me no.  I showed her some cute outfits online and she finally yielded.  Especially when her BFF said that she was going to be fairy and that they would both have wings if Hayley was a butterfly.  Yes!  Victory!

I got my theme.  The Richmeier Bugs it was!!  I got a great deal on Hayley's butterfly costume, it was marked down to $14.99 the day I ordered it and Jack's bee costume.  My friend Emily sent me her daughter's adorable ladybug costume from the year before.  It was a Pottery Barn costume, score!!  Ryan loved it and refused to take it off for a couple hours after it had arrived in the mail.

The kid's made good use out of their costumes.  We spent Friday night at Hayley's school attending the Monster Mash, where Ryan also won for best costume in her age group!!  She won a $5 gift certificate to Cold Stone.  Hayley almost won, it was between her and another girl.  I was a judge by the way, but I did not sway the vote!  Yesterday we went to the local downtown district where the kids were able to trick-or-treat at the local shops.

And today, was the big day!  The girls were excited all day for trick-or-treating.  When dusk came, we set out in our neighborhood.  Jack only lasted halfway, my poor little bumble-bee needed a nap.  Hayley was ready to go home shortly after Jack, she complained about her feet hurting.  Ryan, on the other hand, was determined and had no plans of stopping.  She went to every house with a light on in the loop we made.  Even after tripping and scrapping her knees twice, she wanted her candy!  At three, she's a pro!

All-in-all, it was a fun weekend.  My parents are also in town visiting, so it made it that much more special.  They got to be with Jack for his first Halloween and spend it with the girls as well.  And my Richmeier Bugs were so cute!!  Now, I have another year to decide on next year's theme and get Ryan convinced.  She already told me that she wants to be a ladybug next year too.

Monday Minute

Already November!?!!  Really?  How did that happen?  The good news is that my birthday is coming up and my husband's too.  And a shout out to my Mom since today is her birthday, Happy Birthday Mom!!  I love you!  Only 53 shopping days left until Christmas!  Scary.  Good things I have some of my shopping already done!  I also hope that everyone had a safe happy Halloween!  Can we say sugar high from digging through my kid's candy?!?  Now, time for Monday Minute!  Head on over to Is There a Doctor in the House? to link up.

What did you dress up as your first Halloween?

I was a witch, for a few years actually.  I think my aunt made the costume for me, I even have it somewhere.  It was really cute.  I've also been told I dragged my little bucket behind me because it was so full.  I must have been so cute.

What has been your favorite Halloween costume of all time?

Ok, so this isn't really a Halloween costume, but it was one of my favorite Halloweens ever.  I went Trick-or-Treating with my friends, we were in high school, so we were on the verge of being too old.  But we wanted to go.  We didn't have costumes, per-say, but we came up with what we thought was a brilliant idea.  I was wearing the regular teen fashion of the time.  My friend Jen was in an old 70's track suit she had found at Goodwill and my friend Holly has on these metallic pants with a matching shirt.  So, when adults found us three teens at the door and inquired about our "costumes," we told them that we were the "Past, Present and Future."  Get it?  We thought it was clever.  And, so did everyone else.  It was epic.  Ok, maybe not epic, but it was pretty awesome.  It was the last time I ever went Trick-or-Treating and I'm glad that it was so much fun.  So, that would have to be one of my favorites.  That and my little witch costume when I was a kid.

Do you believe in ghosts?

Yes, I do.  Enough said, I have no doubts.  I may not believe every ghost story that I've ever heard, but after some off encounters and other weird tales, I very much believe that they exist.

What's your favorite holiday of the year?

Halloween is definitely one of my favorites.  It's the beginning of the holiday season, before people become all crazy and consumed with the madness of Christmas.  The costumes, the candy and the spooky TV.  So much fun!  That being said, I would say that Christmas is my favorite.  Especially now that I have children.  I love the traditions that we are making as a family.  I love my children's wishes and their belief in magic.  I love the awe they have in the season.  I love their excitement for all things Christmas.  I love the family part.  It's just such a fun wonderful time that reminds me of how blessed I am.

What's your favorite fall dessert?

Pumpkin pie, is there really any other?  Oh and homemade whipped cream to top it!  Anything with pumpkin makes me happy.

The Carving of the Pumpkins

Before Halloween, there were three trips to the local pumpkin patches and one quick stop at a produce vendor.  A few week ago we headed to a local pumpkin patch with some friends.  It was super chilly and we decided not to stay too long because it was far too cold for Baby Jack.  He was not a happy boy.  I was hoping to get all traditional pictures we got in the pumpkins when we took the girls for the first time, but again, he was not happy.  At all.  So, I took a few and hope for a warmer weekend next year!

See how happy he looked!

He just wanted to go home!
Ready to find the perfect pumpkin!!

After our family trip, both girls had school field trips to the pumpkin patch.  Neither Jonas or I could attend these.  Siblings aren't allowed and Jack still has a hard time with a bottle.  I was really bummed about Ryan's since it was her first field trip with her preschool.  But, I know there will be opportunities to go on other field trips with her throughout the year.  And Hayley too.  My baby boy needs me right now.

Last weekend, we carved our pumpkins.  It's one of my favorite things to do for Halloween.  I love to light them up the weekend before Halloween comes.  And the girls love it too.  Jonas was a little less enthusiastic about the pumpkin carving.  Infact, when he was a kid, they just drew on their pumpkins.  Lameness...

Before Hayley's field trip and my trip to the produce stand.
And we're all done!
And this is what Baby Jack did while we carved pumpkins!

Five Question Friday

It's already Friday and only two more days until Halloween.  I'm so excited about the kids' costumes, they're going to be so adorable.  So.  Adorable.  My parents are also in town visiting and the girls are so excited to have them here with us.  I'm looking forward to having them around since the girls no longer want nothing to do with Jonas and I.  Don't get me wrong, I love my kids, but it's also a nice break.  And it's so cute to see them hanging with their MawMaw and PawPaw.  On to 5QF!!  Check out My Little Life to link up!

1. If you could be a fly on any wall, which would you choose?

That's a hard one, there are so many.  I want to know if Hoda Kotb ever tells Kathy Lee to back off during a commercial break or to go easy on the liquor.  Seriously, Kathy Lee is super annoying and mean to Hoda sometimes.  I love when they make fun of them on SNL.

2. Do you budget your Christmas shopping or just get it done without budgeting?

I do, budget, per say...  I set a limit on what I want to spend on the kids and go from there.  Jonas and I brainstorm on what gifts to buy and get ideas from the kids when we're out and about.  There's always one big gift and few extras.  And of course, stockings.  We also have a traditional Christmas Eve gift of new pajamas and a new book.  I try to start pretty early, I've already got some shopping done already and plan to get a few things this week.  I watch for sales on things I want to get for them.  I try not to go too over board, the kid's also get stuff from grandparents and other family/friends.  I'm usually done shopping for them before December even starts.

3. What is the craziest fad diet you have ever done?

Ummm.... I don't think I've ever really tried one.  I tried supplements before, those just made me jittery.  I've tried tea too, but that didn't work.  I tried Atkins and that gave me a headache for two weeks.  I've done Slimfast before.  And Special K.  I've never really tried anything too crazy, that cookie diet is a little intriguing.  Lol... Now, I've got their stupid commercial jingle in my head...Who stole a cookie from the cookie jar??

4. Is there a TV show that you have seen every episode/season of?

There's are so many, I should be ashamed.  The Tudors, Lost, Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, True Blood, Desperate Housewives, The Big Bang Theory, Pysch, The Eleventh Hour (I was upset it was canceled, that and Mercy too)... I could go on...I'm a TV junkie.

5. What one song always pulls at your heart?

Rascal Flatt's God Bless the Broken Road and Garth Brooks Unanswered Prayers.  Dixie Chicks songs too.  Country songs get to me.  The Beatles make me think of my Uncle David that passed away a few years ago.  Alan Jackson reminds me of my niece when she was little because she used to like to sing all his songs.  From this Moment is Jonas and I's song, we danced to it at our wedding.  Sorry, that's more than one.  Oh well.

Thanks again!

Thankful on Tuesday

Today I am thankful for fresh sushi from Haggen's.  I love sushi.  I love that it's now so trendy that it's readily available.  You can buy sushi just about anywhere now, although I wouldn't buy it just any where.  I've been eating sushi for over ten years and then, you couldn't go get sushi from a grocery store.  Then, you had to go to a sushi restaurant.  Don't get me wrong, a sushi bar has far better sushi.  But for this momma of three, I love that I can run into Haggen's in the morning, order what I want from the sushi chef, pay for it, return home and throw it into the refrigerator for later.  And it's pretty good, really good.  It makes me happy.  I'm thankful.  That is all.  Happy Tuesday everyone.

Monday Minute

Time for another Monday Minute with Cristy!  Head on over to Is There a Doctor in the House? to link up.  I am excited for this week; my parents are coming to visit and soon it will be Halloween.  I love Halloween, it's so much fun.  We carved our pumpkins today and the kid's costumes should be arriving in the next couple days.  So.  Much.  Fun.

(1) Have you ever been hospitalized? (OK, maybe that one isn't so upbeat)

Yes, the first time when I was 16 and I had my gall bladder removed.  So much fun, let me tell you!  And again with the birth of each of my children.  I had an emergency c-section with Hayley and had repeats with Ryan and Jack.

(2) What’s the last bit of good news you received?

Hmmm... well, just this last week I went to Hayley's parent-teacher conference.  I learned that my girl is a rock star!  Yes, I'm going to brag.  I know she's a great kid and an awesome student, but it's nice to hear it from someone else.  She's doing great in first grade and her teacher had a lot of good things to say about her.   Hayley is reading far beyond what's expected and doing just as well in other areas.  It was even recommended that we submit her for testing for the HiCap Program.  Yeah for Hayley!  Jonas and I are so proud of her.

(3) Who was your favorite teacher?

That's tough, there were are a few.  One would be Mr. Leonard from high school, he was my AP English teacher my senior year.  I always enjoyed that class.  He was and still is an awesome teacher.  This year is his last year.  He's retiring after 25 years.  (Here's his blog.)And secondly would be another high school teacher, Mr. Marr.  I took his Psychology class.  He always spelt my name wrong on my hall pass, but I'm fairly sure he just did it on purpose to see my reaction.  I still send both of them Christmas cards every year.  Another is Dr. Rees from college, his history classes were alway so much more than dates, places and facts.  We learned about the effects of different events on so many levels.  His classes were always great.

(4) Do you sing in the shower?

Sometimes, but not really.  Only when the moment strikes, but it's not a regular thing.

(5) Describe the happiest day of your life.

Hmmm... there are so many.  Getting engaged, getting married and having kids.  To be honest, having Jack was an extremely happy day for me.  The pregnancy was so hard, I was so sick and I was constantly worried about him.  After two normal routine pregnancies, a high risk one was hard to cope with at times.  That morning, when we was born, he was fine.  He was healthy.  He was perfect.  After going through weeks and weeks of agony over whether or not he would be okay, I felt euphoric and truly blessed.  It was a very happy day for me.

And Cristy, I am a little inspired by your response, so here's another one.  Jonas and I had a long distance relationship.  It was hard, but we made sure to make us a priority.  My parents had moved me and my sister down South.  I'll be frank, I was miserable down there.  I missed my friends and I missed Jonas.  I counted the days until graduation and summer; when I knew I could move back to Colorado.  But then, one day, my Dad announced that we were moving back to Colorado.  I was so excited.  I didn't tell Jonas at first, because I thought it was too good to be true.  I finally caved and told him.  He was happy too.  It was awesome.  It was such a happy day because I knew I was finally going back home where I would be happy and be with Jonas.

Ryan's Dream

As I was laying in bed trying to convince myself to get up and start my day, I heard Ryan shout for her sister.  Ryan then jumped out of her bed to look for Hayley, she obviously had something important to share with her.  After locating Hayley downstairs, playing her DS, Ryan excitedly tells Hayley that she has a new blue Leapster.  (Ryan has a Leapster Explorer that she got for her birthday back in August.)  Hayley, like her momma in always having to be right, bluntly tells Ryan that no, she did not.  Ryan, fiesty and convinced, yells at Hayley and tells her that she did in fact get a new blue Leapster.  Arguement ensues.

All the while, Jonas and I are listening to this exchange from upstairs.  Honestly, we were confused.  Ryan's really not one to make up stories and she did not get a new Leapster.  Before Ryan's and Hayley's discussion become heated, I called her upstairs, Hayley followed.  I asked her if she had had a dream about her Leapster.  She nodded her head and told me she had gotten a new blue Leapster.  And Hayley butted in and said; "no you didn't Ryan."  (And she pronounced Ryan like Ryy-Annnn! Attitude and all.)  Jonas and I both told Hayley to be quiet and leave Ryan alone.

It was too late!  Ryan looked up at me with her big eyes and frowny face, tears began to well up in her eyes and her face was becoming increasingly red.  I told her that it was okay.  She told me again, in her tiny hurt feeling voice that she did get a new blue Leapster.  Jonas, in a smart move, announced that it was time for breakfast; in an effort to change the subject.  Thankfully, it worked, until my smarty-pants -has-to-get-the-last-word-in Hayley told Ryan that she didn't get a new Leapster.  That it was only a dream.  Uh!  I had to resist the urge to smack Hayley upside the head, it really wasn't necessary to rub it in since Ryan was so clearly confused.  My poor Ryan just didn't understand and was upset about the situation.

It's late afternoon now.  I asked Ryan about her dream a little while ago and she told me again, that she had gotten a new blue Leapster.  She really does believe that she got a new one and doesn't realize that it was only a dream.  She has even looked for it around the house.  Jonas and I are both at a loss of how to explain to her that she just had a dream and that it wasn't real.  Thinking back, I remember dreams from my childhood and truly believing that it had happened.  That I had really received whatever it was that I had dreamt about.  It was so real.  Heck, I still have dreams like that as an adult.  But I also know that when I wake up, it was only a dream.

While it's endearing and somewhat comical that Ryan is so convinced by her dream, it's also a little sad because there's no way to get her to understand that it was only a dream.  She's only three, we just have to go with it and let her figure it out.  It broke my heart a little when she couldn't find her blue Leapster and became upset about it.  I know she'll let it go and move on, but what am I going to do when she dreams about getting a pony?

Five Question Friday

It's Friday and that means that it is time for another 5QF!  Head on over to My Little Life to link up.  Hope everyone has a fun weekend!  I am looking forward to staying in this weekend and getting some much needed rest!  After being sick and having sick kids, I need a break!  I also need to get my house cleaned up before my parents fly in next week.  It's actually fairly clean, just not my mom visiting clean.  I'm really excited about them coming to visit, my Dad will finally get to meet his newest grand baby, Mister Jack!

1. Who is the better cook, you or your spouse?

Hmmm...sorry Jonas, but I will have to go with ME on this one.  Although, there are a few dishes that my husband is awesome at cooking.  He actually just got into cooking over this last year, mostly because I was so sick during my pregnancy with Jack and it became necessary.  Jonas makes awesome chocolate chip cookies.  But, I'm a pretty good cook, I've screwed things up, I admit, but I make a really good pot roast.  And chicken Parmesan.  And red bean and rice. Mmmm....

2. How often do you talk to your mom?

Like everyday, seriously.  Sometimes a few times a day.  I feel weird if I don't talk to her for more than a day or two.  Or she calls me if I haven't called her.  The girls also talk to her too.  My mom lives on the other side of the country, so we talk a lot.

3. Are you adventurous in the kitchen or stick to the recipe?

That really depends.  If it's something I've never cooked before, then I will be sticking with the recipe.  If it's something I'm comfortable with, I might dabble with the recipe a bit.  I've also created my own dishes without the aid of a recipe.  Like I said, it really depends.

4. Is your second toe longer than your big toe?

Nope, that would be my husband.  He has some weird toes.

5. Do you dress up for Halloween? (Bonus question: What will you be this year?)

I haven't in years.  In fact, one of the last times I did dress up for Halloween was in high school and I ended up on the front cover of our town's newspaper.  I was handing out candy at the coffee shop I worked at and was photographed in my bee outfit.  I looked pretty cute though.  Jonas and I say that we're going to dress up every year and we never do.  Hopefully next year, I want to do a pirate theme.
